Crossing the River

This is a good problem-solving puzzle.

You are on an expedition with three colleagues: Tom Wolfe, Walter Pigeon and Stuart Grainger. You have to cross a river using a small dinghy which can hold only two people at a time. Unfortunately, Tom Wolfe doesn't like Walter Pigeon — and Stuart Grainger irritates Walter Pigeon. Given the stresses of the expedition, you are concerned that leaving either Tom and Walter — or Walter and Stuart — alone together could result in serious consequences for the success of the expedition. How do you cross the river?

Try this problem as an outdoor exercise.
