Arrange 6 Blocks Solution

Like most of these types of problem, this one can only be solved with the use of creative thinking. In this case the puzzle can only be solved in three dimensions...

One solution is to arrange four of the blocks together and putting the other two blocks on top of them as shown in Figure 1.

Variations

Engineers in your group may argue that this is not a correct solution because if these were perfect boxes with perfectly-shaped corners, the blocks in the first layer would touch a fourth block across the corners. This problem can be overcome by re-arranging the blocks in the first layer so that their corners are moved away from the middle as shown in Figure 2.

The solution is completed by placing the remaining two blocks on top as shown in Figure 3.

A third solution to the problem is apparent when people realise that blocks do not have to be 'chunky' or cubes but can also be long and thin. In this solution, three blocks are laid, separated from each other, on a surface and the other three blocks are laid on top, separated from each other and at right angles to the first layer. See Figure 4.
