Currently, the kilogram is defined by the weight of a platinum-based ingot called 'Le Grand K' which is in a safe in Paris. On 16 November 2018, researchers meeting in Versailles voted to define a kilogram in terms of an electric current as part of the 2019 redefinition of SI base units. The decision was made at the 26th General Conference on Weights and Measures.
